NMFC Changes, Phase 2 on the Horizon?

As we all know, as of July 19, 2025 there was a massive overhaul to the NMFC classifications. This impacted the old 11-sub density scale to a 13-sun density scale, along with the retirement and change of nearly 2,000 NMFCs.

This has impacted freight packaging, dimensions, and weight, due to most commodities changing to fully density based. Although we have seen this change, we have also seen positive changes:

• Consolidates and simplifies many NMFC items.

• Uses clearer, more logical density-based rules, easier for clients to understand.

• Improves visibility into why a shipment is rated a certain way.

• Fewer re-classifications, due to many similar NMFCs.

Saying this, we are expecting this will only be Phase one of this change, as of December 6th, we were notified new docket changes are yet to come in the next overhaul. When will this next overhaul be? We yet to see, but are being extremely vigilant as we work through the current structure changes, and await what is yet to come.
